Charging a company EV at home: metering and reimbursement

The short answer

For your employer to reimburse home charging, the car's consumption must be measured separately from the rest of the household. The simplest way is a wallbox with a certified energy meter and a record of each charging session.

Why an estimate isn't enough

Charging electricity is a cost for the company and a reimbursement for you. Both need to be documented. A photo of a display or a hand-kept spreadsheet is weak evidence in an audit, and if you also charge at public stations or at work, estimating from the household bill doesn't work at all.

How to meter it

• A wallbox with a verified meter (look for the MID marking). It measures exactly how many kWh went into the car, and the data can be exported.
• A separate sub-meter in the consumer unit for the wallbox circuit only. Useful when you already have a wallbox without metering.
• Records in the app — smart wallboxes can tell sessions apart by RFID card, so private and company cars can be separated.

How reimbursement works

An employer can reimburse electricity at the actual price you pay, or at the average electricity price published each year in the Czech Ministry of Labour's travel-expenses decree. The second route is simpler — the company doesn't need to deal with your tariff or whether some of the power comes from solar panels.

Exactly how to set it up for you is a question for your company's accountant or tax adviser. We make sure the metering holds up.

Who pays for the wallbox

Some companies buy the wallbox for the employee, some contribute, others leave it to them. That decides whose wallbox it is and what happens if you leave the company. Agree it in writing before installation.
