A wallbox in Brno and South Moravia: connecting with EG.D step by step

In Brno and South Moravia the grid operator is EG.D. A typical wallbox is 11 kW, so you'll need a connection request. It isn't complicated, it just has to be done in the right order.

The short answer

In Brno and South Moravia the grid operator is EG.D. According to EG.D the rule is simple:

  • Up to 3.7 kW no connection contract is needed.
  • Above 3.7 kW you file a connection request. That covers practically every wallbox, since a typical home wallbox is 11 kW.

The request is filed online on the EG.D website. We file it on your behalf.

How to tell which grid operator you have

Look at your electricity bill. The grid operator is listed with the supply point, alongside the main breaker rating. The grid operator isn't your supplier: you choose the supplier, the grid operator is set by your address. In and around Brno it's EG.D, as in most of the South Moravian Region.

How the EG.D request works

  1. Online request. For an existing supply point it's a change in the type of consumption, i.e. adding a charger.
  2. Assessment. EG.D checks whether the local grid can carry it.
  3. Draft connection contract. You receive it to sign and return within the deadline EG.D sets.
  4. Installation and inspection. Once the contract is signed, the wallbox is installed, the commissioning inspection is issued and the charger can go into use.

You can track the request on the EG.D website. That's why we file it right after the survey, not after installation.

Is your main breaker enough?

EG.D gives a minimum of 3×16 A for 11 kW and 3×32 A for 22 kW. That's for the charger alone, though. At home a water heater, cooker or heat pump runs at the same time, often at night, exactly when the car charges.

This is usually handled by dynamic load management: the wallbox throttles itself when the house draws more. Upgrading the breaker is then usually unnecessary. If it is needed, a separate breaker-change request goes to EG.D and you pay a share of the costs depending on the size of the upgrade. More in is a 3×25 A breaker enough?

The cheaper D 27d tariff

EV owners can get the D 27d distribution tariff for households, businesses C 27d. The condition is that the supply point holder demonstrably owns or uses an electric car.

Apartment buildings in Brno

In an apartment building the work affects common parts, so consent from the owners' association is needed. EG.D recommends two things worth knowing up front:

  • Dynamic load management. With shared management, 1 to 2 kW per parking space is usually enough, so the building doesn't need to increase its reserved capacity for every charger.
  • A separate supply for charging from the main building feed. It allows the cheaper C 27d tariff and clean billing of consumption.

What we arrange

At the survey a partner electrician looks at the consumer unit, the breaker and the cable route. We give you a price, file the request with EG.D, and after installation you receive the inspection report. We cover Brno and the whole South Moravian Region.
