How much you save charging at home instead of a public point

The gap between a home charger and a public post is not a few crowns. It is two to four times, and on normal mileage it runs to tens of thousands a year.

The prices involved

Indicative Czech market figures for 2026 — always check the current numbers with your supplier and operator, they move:

  • At home on the low tariff (D 27d): roughly CZK 3.50–4.50/kWh
  • Public AC charger: roughly CZK 6–9/kWh
  • Public DC rapid charger: roughly CZK 9–14/kWh, more on premium networks

One thing people forget: charging without an app or registration typically costs 20 to 40 % more. Ad-hoc card payment is the most expensive way to get electricity into a car.

Worked out over 300 kilometres

A typical EV covers 300 km on about 48 kWh — roughly a month of commuting around Prague.

  • At home on the low tariff: about CZK 170–215
  • Public AC: about CZK 290–430
  • Public DC: about CZK 430–670

So home versus rapid charging is a two- to fourfold difference.

When the installation pays for itself

  1. Take your annual kilometres.
  2. Divide by 6.25 for approximate consumption in kWh (at 16 kWh/100 km).
  3. Multiply by the price difference per kWh that applies to you.

At 15,000 km a year you use about 2,400 kWh. At a CZK 5/kWh difference that is around CZK 12,000 a year, so a CZK 38,000 installation pays back in roughly three years — before counting the time saved.

At 3,000 km a year you save about CZK 2,400 and payback runs past ten years. That buyer gets a wallbox for convenience, not savings — and it is fair to say so.

What increases the saving

The D 27d tariff. Without it you pay the standard price and half the saving disappears — see our article on the tariff.

Solar. Charging from your own surplus costs almost nothing — see charging from surplus.

Scheduled charging. A charger that runs only in cheap hours beats any amount of planning in your head.

A caveat

You will not always charge at home. Long trips still mean DC chargers at their prices. Home charging covers everyday driving — which for most people is the vast majority of kilometres.
